DAF bounces back, launches hybrid 12-tonne LF27 September 2010

After what Harrie Schippers, president of DAF called "One of the most challenging years in the transport industry and the truck market" the truck manufacturer is rebounding and predicting stability for 2010 and then years of growth.

Despite a drop in sales in the UK, due to an unfavourable exchange rate, Schippers says that 20% of the 15T and under market is the target for growth.

DAF believes that this growth will come from investment and subsequent roll out of a number of technologies that are designed to further improve truck and fleet efficiency, many of which were launched at the IAA in Hannover.

One of the technologies to help DAF in its quest will be a 12-tonne LF hybrid that was launched at the IAA in Hannover. Developed in collaboration with Eaton, Eindhoven University and Leyland Trucks and due to enter production later this year, the truck will be powered by an EEV-compliant 4.5-litre diesel engine and a 160kg Li-ion battery pack.

In the LF, the system, which already propels the hybrid PACCAR trucks in the US, the powertrain offers a maximum power of 160bhp, with the engine mated to an automated six-speed gearbox.

The battery pack allows electric-only travel for up to 2km, which DAF claims is perfect for entering and leaving low emission city zones. DAF revealed that in trials the LF hybrid, which has a 7.5-tonne payload, customers realised average fuel savings of 16%, with some participants benefitting from a drop in fuel consumtion and CO2 of more than 20%.
