Dublin City Council takes first new-series Volvo FL crew cabs10 February 2015

Dublin City Council has taken delivery of the UK and Ireland’s first new Euro 6 Volvo FL 4x2 rigids equipped with factory-built crew cabs.

Supplied by dealer Irish Commercials, the Council's two new additions are four-door crew-cab FLs, with seating for up to seven people.

Each has Volvo's 7.7-litre D250K engine rated at 250bhp, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

As for the cab, it tilts to 40 degrees for maintenance access and has been fitted with front underrun protection (FUPS). Additionally, the rear passenger compartment can accommodate up to four people and is accessed via its own doors and two wide, low steps.

Turning to the chassis, it has a steel-suspended drive axle fitted with a diff lock, while a rear anti-roll bar, which comes as standard, provides mechanical stability.

Dublin City Council's vehicles were also specified with rear underrun protection (RUPS), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), EBS+ package with Traction Aid and Hill Hold.

Both trucks were also equipped for towing and a reverse camera is also fitted.

The Council's trucks are in operation as tippers, but can also be fitted with demountable gritter bodywork.

The gritter spreader mechanism is driven by the engine live drive PTO, with tipper bodywork built and fitted by Griffith J Roberts, of Ballycoolin, Dublin.
