Flogas powers green fleet with Volvo Bio-LNG trucks29 August 2019

Flogas has become the first UK gas supplier to operate Volvo trucks powered by Bio-LNG, saying the two new additions will be “the first of many”.

Supplied by Volvo Truck and Bus Centre East Anglia, the Globetrotter-cabbed Volvo FM tractors are specified with 4.1m wheelbases and factory-fitted Lite pusher axles.

The G13C460 LNG engines produce 454bhp at 1,700 to 1,800rpm, and have a peak torque figure of 2,300Nm from 1,100 to 1,300rpm.

The LNG engines also provide secondary vehicle retardation systems thanks to the VEB (Volvo Engine Brake) and exhaust pressure governors. I-Shift 12-speed automated transmission systems and single reduction drive axles with a ratio of 2.64:1 round off the powertrain assemblies.

The new additions join Flogas’s delivery operation, transporting bulk LPG and LNG across the UK. The fleet also includes dual-fual and electric hybrid vehicles, as part of the operator’s plan to expand its use of alternatively fuelled trucks.

“These trucks are just the first of many, as we look to make our 200-strong fleet cleaner, greener and increasingly future proof,” says James Goodson, Flogas’s national account manager for alternative transport fuels.

“They will each be powered by approximately 30 tonnes of renewable Bio-LNG each year – a highly sustainable biofuel that’s produced during the anaerobic digestion process. This means they’ll be 50% quieter, they’ll release significantly fewer pollutants and fuel costs will be far lower.”
