Sensors as standard for haulage firm01 November 2013

West Midlands firm Andyfreight is now specifying JOST sensor fifth wheel coupling systems as standard for all of its Mercedes-Benz Actros tractor units.

The system uses three sensors to monitor the connection of the tractor and trailer while coupling and un-coupling. The signals are combined and processed by the remote display in the cab, giving the driver a clear visual display of the status of the fifth wheel.

Andy Pountney, managing director of the Stourbridge-based firm, comments: "We wanted to find a system that would help our drivers maintain their excellent health and safety record, and our previous experience with JOST equipment has shown it to be reliable and easy to use...

"I am surprised that this type of system is not factory fitted as standard by all manufacturers, giving drivers the reassurance that the trailer is correctly coupled and locked in position," he adds.

Andyfreight has recently taken delivery of several new Mercedes Actros units and anticipates seeing savings in fuel costs over the year for each new unit.

Its specification for a fixed fifth wheel, rather than the sliding version, will also help to reduce costs, but fitting the JOST sensor system was not a financial decision, says Pountney

"This project was all about health and safety. We have looked at other, similar systems, but our drivers and mechanics all stated a preference for the JOST system," he explains.

"It is reliable, simple to use and provides improved safety as well as peace of mind, all of which improves the performance of our drivers."
